The Manchester Urban Observatory draws on expertise from across the University of Manchester's three faculties. Of strategic significance to the Urban Observatory are the Manchester Urban Institute (MUI) and the Manchester Environmental Research Institute (MERI), which have been established as interdisciplinary hubs bringing together academic and non-academic expertise from all over the world.
The mission of the Urban Observatories is to understand how to monitor cities at multiple scales both temporal and spatial and across multiple sectors. The approach will enable discovery-led science through large scale deployments of scientific instruments in the city to answer questions about technology, data storage, data standards and communications as well as more far reaching questions about the scale of monitoring required to carry out experiments in the city (density, accuracy, repeatability).
The Australian Urban Observatory is a digital platform that transforms complex urban data into easily understood liveability maps across Australia’s 21 largest cities. The Observatory draws on over 8 years of policy-relevant research by the Healthy Liveable Cities Group, within the Centre for Urban Research at RMIT University.
