Legoland Malaysia targets 1.5 million visitors

Asia's first Legoland targets to attract 1.5 million visitors when it opens its doors at the end of 2012.

Located in Nusa Cermelang industrial park, within the Iskandar New Economic Region, the theme park will boast the tallest lego model in the world.

The backgrounds of the 22 young Malaysians - pioneer model builders for Legoland Malaysia - are diverse, coming from engineering, architecture, and fine arts.

They beat over 800 other job seekers at a recent hiring contest.

In the first round, contestants were given 25 minutes to copy a model of a seahorse.


S'pore Port in 1500 hours

SINGAPORE'S dynamic port has caught the attention of Legoland builders. It will capture the spirit of the world's busiest port with Lego bricks no bigger than your pinky finger.

Legoland Malaysia, which opens in 2012, will feature over 15,000 structures made out of 30 million Lego bricks. Only 10 per cent of the theme park has been developed to date. This is the first theme park in Asia and the 5th in the world.

Featuring miniature models of Singapore's Port and Malaysia's Petronas Towers, Legoland Malaysia will have an Asian focus. It will also have one iconic structure from each Asean country. Legoland is not revealing the exact details just yet, keeping its fans in much suspense.


Poser over Johor Corp CEO’s future

The Johor government has yet to decide whether to extend the service of Tan Sri Muhammad Ali Hashim, the president and chief executive officer of its investment arm, Johor Corp (JCorp).

Mentri Besar Datuk Abdul Ghani Othman, who is also the chairman of JCorp, said Ali’s tenure would end at the end of the year.

He declined to comment when asked whether the state government was looking for suitable candidates to replace him.

“The only thing that I can tell you today is that his term will end this year,” Ghani told journalists after visiting the Legoland Malaysia Model Building Centre at the Nusa Cemerlang industrial park on Thursday.


Wajib 10% rizab tanaman

Setiap projek pembangunan perumahan disyarat menyediakan sekurang-kurangnya sepuluh peratus kawasan rizab lapang untuk tanaman pelbagai spesies pokok sama ada pokok teduhan, hutan atau herba.

Menteri Besar Johor, Datuk Abdul Ghani Othman berkata, kawasan perindustrian juga disyaratkan mengambil langkah yang sama bagi mewujudkan persekitaran kondusif dengan menanam lebih banyak pokok teduhan di kawasan masing-masing.

Sehubungan itu, beliau menyarankan pemaju merujuk dahulu laporan awal kesan alam sekitar supaya pembangunan yang bakal dijalankan tidak memberi kesan negatif kepada alam sekitar.

"Matlamat kita adalah untuk menjadikan Johor sebagai Negara Taman Terindah menjelang 2020 selaras dengan hasrat kerajaan Persekutuan.


Land gazetted for tree planting

The state government has identified 180ha of land for planting jungle trees as part of efforts to achieve its aim of setting up state parks.

Johor Mentri Besar Datuk Abdul Ghani Othman said 24ha of land had been allocated to set up the Hutan Bandar Mutiara Rini.

“We will also be allocating land to plant jungle trees in various other areas in the state,” he said during the launch of the state landscape day at the Bukit Layang-Layang in Pasir Gudang here.

Abdul Ghani explained other identified areas to plant the jungle trees include 40ha in Bandar Indahpura Kulaijaya, 20ha in Pasir Gudang, 32ha in Taman Teknologi Tinggi Senai and 64ha in Taman Linear.


Life of Johor’s first MB on stage

A stage play on the life of Johor’s first Mentri Besar Datuk Jaafar Mohamed titled Bumi Berlantai Permata will be performed today and tomorrow at the main stage in Bangunan Sultan Ibrahim, Bukit Timbalan.

The musical is presented by Johor Society Performing Arts, Alpha Industrial Consult and the Johor Government, with tickets priced at RM5, RM25 and RM30.

Yayasan Pelajaran Johor’s (YPJ) Sahruddin Manas is directing the play which is part of the Johor Baru Arts Festival 2010 programme.

“The play is about the history and glory days of the Johor Government during the time of Jaafar,” he said.

He said the musical tells the story of Jaafar’s struggles in defending the sovereignty of Johor from the British.


New chairman: Uda to focus on three core businesses

The newly appointed chairman of Uda Holdings, Datuk Nur Jazlan Mohamed, wants the company to focus on three core business areas, namely, real estate, development of town and management of shopping complexes in three major cities in the country.

This was to make a success of the bumiputra mission as set out by the Government in the 10th Malaysia Plan and the New Economic Model, he said.

“The cities would be Johor Baru, Kuala Lumpur and Georgetown,” he told reporters on Saturday.

Nur Jazlan said he had received briefings from Uda managing director Datuk Jaafar Abu Hassan and had directed its management to focus on the businesses in the three cities.


TM sets UniFi connection target for premises

Telekom Malaysia Bhd (TM) expects 6% to 8% of the 750,000 premises to be connected to UniFi by year-end to become subscribers, said HSBB programme manager Ahmad Azhar Yahya.

During the press conference for UniFi July Rollout yesterday, Ahmad said the subscribers growth would be gradual and supported by its wider UniFi coverage as well as bigger service platform.

“We have close to 5,000 subscribers from residential and business customers now. The subscribers will begin to pay their monthly subscription fees this month,” he said, adding that previously, Unifi subscribers were not charged with subscription fees.

However, he declined to comment on the expected contribution from the UniFi service to the company’s revenue this year.


IBM experts work with special kids in JB

German IBM senior business analyst Sonja Grunke was charmed by the values of family and friendship that she found on her maiden trip to Malaysia.

She was part of the fourth IBM Corporate Service Corps (CSC) team to visit the country. The team of six IBM experts from four countries were here for about a month to carry out volunteer work at Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) and the Handicapped and Mentally Disabled Children’s Association of Johor (HOME).

In their time here, the visitors from the United States, Germany, China and Turkey helped set up UTM’s carbon footprint monitoring system and web presence, worked with Iskandar Malaysia UTM Research Centre (IMREC) and introduced new management and marketing methods to HOME.

Kursus dua hari berkenaan adalah satu daripada 32 program dirancang Pejabat Kementerian Pelancongan Malaysia Johor bersama rakan strategik iaitu Jabatan Pelancongan Johor, Tourism Malaysia Johor dan Pihak Berkuasa Wilayah Pembangunan Iskandar (IRDA) sepanjang tahun ini.
