1,000 players from various countries to take part in rugby tourney

More than 1,000 players from all over the nation and Singapore are expected to take part in the largest rugby tournament, Iskandar Malaysia 10’s Rugby Challenge this year.

The three-day tournament, which was the brainchild of the Sultan of Johor Sultan Ibrahim Ibni Almarhum Sultan Iskandar is set to kick off tomorrow until Aug 1.

Johor Rugby Union (JRU) president Mohd Noorazam Osman said this was the third time Johor was hosting the competition, which is jointly organised by Iskandar Regional Development Authority (IRDA) and the JRU.

“I believe the tournament will showcase the state’s long and proud rugby history and as a channel for promoting the sport among Johoreans.


A rise in dengue cases down south

The state recorded a total of seven deaths due to dengue between Jan and July this year, which is an increase of four cases compared to the same period last year.

State Health department deputy director Dr Fatimah Othman said the increase in deaths due to dengue was worrying and the public should take note of the rise.

“Aedes mosquitoes are capable of adapting themselves to their surroundings.

“The mosquitoes will breed even after we have fogged an area, hence people must be mindful of the cleanliness of their premises or homes.

“The reason why there is an increase in dengue fever cases is because there are more breeding grounds for mosquitoes.


Langkah basmi kemiskinan

Kementerian Pembangunan Wanita, Keluarga dan Masyarakat (KPWKM) akan menggunakan pendekatan keusahawanan sosial bagi membantu membasmi kemiskinan di kalangan rakyat.

Menterinya, Datuk Seri Shahrizat Abdul Jalil berkata, ia merupakan satu daripada langkah untuk memastikan potensi individu berdasarkan bidang kemahiran masing-masing agar tidak terus bergantung kepada bantuan kerajaan.

Beliau berkata, salah satu daripada elemen keusahawanan sosial ialah transformasi sosial yang inovatif dan komprehensif yang dilaksanakan oleh kementeriannya menerusi program pembangunan kejiranan lestari.

"Transformasi sosial memerlukan usaha berterusan dalam dua aspek utama iaitu pembangunan fizikal dan modal insan.

JOHOR BAHRU: Mercure Johor Palm Resort & Golf, Hotel Grand Blue Wave dan Hotel The Zon muncul juara Kejohanan Sukan Persatuan Hotel Malaysia (MAH) Johor 2010, baru-baru ini.

Tiga hotel berkenaan berjaya menewaskan lapan lagi hotel yang turut bersaing pada acara tahunan disertai lebih 400 peserta dengan setiap hotel bergabung membentuk empat kumpulan dan bersaing sesame sendiri.

Mercure Johor Palm Resort & Golf, Grand Blue Wave dan The Zon diletakkan dalam Kumpulan Blue Titans BMZ, Kumpulan Yellow Crouching Tigers, disertai Thistle Johor Bahru, Dorsett Hotel dan Tanjung Puteri Golf Resort manakala Pulai Springs Resort, Mutiara Hotel dan Grand Paragon diletakkan dalam Kumpulan ‘Green Dragons’.


Two welfare organisations get cash aid

ISKANDAR Regional Development Authority (IRDA) and its partners recently presented two cheques totalling RM13,220 to two welfare organisations.

Kelapa Sawit Community-based Rehabilitation Centre and the Handicapped and Mentally Disabled Children's Association Johor Baru each received cheques amounting to RM6,610.

IRDA chief operating officer Hilmi Nashir gave the cheque to Handicapped and Mentally-Disabled Children's Association Johor Baru vice-president S. Murugaiyah and Kelapa Sawit Community-based Rehabilitation Centre treasurer Zaharah Md Yusof at the IRDA office.

Hilmi said the presentation of the cheques bore testament that IRDA and its partners were committed in lending their support towards charitable causes.


Efficient Communication System Vital To Draw Investors To Iskandar Malaysia – Ghani

A good, efficient communication network is an important element for Iskandar Malaysia as this could draw investors to the development corridor, said Johor Menteri Besar Datuk Abdul Ghani Othman.

He said this was especially essential as the development corridor would see rapid growth in information communication technology, with the state government itself implementing the e-government concept.

"Communication infrastructure development, especially in high-speed broadband (HSBB), is an important element for Iskandar Malaysia to attract investors," he said at the launching of the TM Sports Carnival at Dataran Bandaraya Johor Baharu, here Friday.

Various events held during festival to educate public to go green

The cry to save Mother Earth was clearly heard during the Walk For Values Carnival here where more than 1,500 people stood together to preach and learn about environmental issues.

The carnival, which started with a marathon, was later followed with various dances, theatrical pieces, musical shows, coral speaking performances and various other acts which were all linked to environmental conservation.

One of the participants, SJKT Ladang Tebrau student, Mrityun Jayan, 10, said he had fun learning about the different ways of preserving nature.

“I learnt that it is not nice to blatantly throw rubbish on the streets and instead people should properly dispose off waste or recycle,” said the excited boy who had attended the carnival with a few of his friends.


Weavers of Lego magic

ASPECTACULAR display of Lego models is in store for visitors once LEGOLAND Malaysia opens its door in Johor in 2012. And the preparations are already in progress.

Recently, a group of 22 model builders showcased their talents in putting together thousands of colourful Lego blocks during a workshop at the Model Building Centre for LEGOLAND Malaysia in Nusa Cemerlang Industrial Park, Nusajaya.

They are part of the team selected last year in the LEGOLAND Malaysia Hiring Competition. They will build more than 15,000 models for the LEGOLAND Malaysia theme park, the first of its kind in Asia.
