New Flyover For Smoother Traffic Flow

12 March 2010, By IRDA

JOHOR BAHRU, Thursday, March 11th: Commuters along Jalan Yahya Awal can now look forward to smoother traffic and less congestion with the new Jalan Yahya Awal flyover which opened to the public last Tuesday. Spanning 800 meters, the RM30.41mil flyover is aimed at dispersing congestion to promote smoother traffic flow to and from Johor Bahru city centre.

One of the 8 infrastructure projects by the Iskandar Regional Development Authority (IRDA) under the Ninth Malaysian Plan (9MP), the flyover project started in October 2008 and was completed 6 months ahead of the targeted completion date of October 2010.

On a working visit to the flyover, IRDA chief executive, Ismail Ibrahim said the enhanced accessibility could generate employment opportunities and improve the quality of life in surrounding areas.

“We are very thankful to both the State and Federal Government for their support in these infrastructure projects for the benefit of the Rakyat.

“I also personally thank the road-users and the community here for their patience and co-operation with the short-term inconvenience caused by our infrastructure project. I assure you, the long term benefits are for all to share,” he said.

Ismail assured the public that it was compulsory for contractors who were awarded IRDA projects to adhere strictly to worksite safety guidelines to ensure it was benchmarked against best practices.

“We will not hesitate to take action against any errant contractors and we welcome the public’s feedback should they feel that a certain project is not being carried out in the proper manner.

“Do contact us directly through our hotline or email. We promise to listen to all comments positively,” said Ismail.

On another matter, Ismail added he was pleased to inform that IRDA’s RMK9 Roads and Highways projects were progressing as per schedule.

“Besides roads and highways, we are also improving the city centre’s drainage system and this project is already 95% completed as per schedule. Once completed, the city centre can experience improved drainage and water flow which mitigates and reduces flash floods,” he said.

He added the remaining works would be completed by Quarter 2 of this year.

Members of the public who would have enquiries or would like to provide feedback to the Authority can do so by calling +607-218 3100 or emailing rmk9info@irda.com.my.
