The Tanjung Langsat Industrial Complex has attracted 10 multinationals and their investments totalling RM4 billion create more than 4,000 employment opportunites for the local population.
Johor Menteri Besar Datuk Abdul Ghani Othman revealed this Monday at the launch of Langsat Terminal (One) Sdn Bhd (LgT-1).
LgT-1, a joint-venture tank terminal project between Dialog Group Bhd, MISC Bhd and Puma Energy Asia BV whose holding company is Trafigura Beheer BV, is located within the vicinity of Tanjung Langsat Port in Pasir Gudang.
The addition of LgT-1 to the Langsat Industrial Complex, Ghani said, would boost the state government's effort to develop Southeast Johor as the next regional oil and gas hub.
"I am confident that Johor will be able to attract more than RM50 bilion foreign direct investment in the oil and gas sector by 2013, and this will go a long way in reaffirming our focus in turning this part of the state into an oil and gas hub of international repute," he said.
The southeast coast of Johor is located along one of the busiest shipping routes in the world with natural deepwater achorage and plenty of industrial land to spare.
To improve the region's viability as the next growth area, Ghani said, efforts were currently underway to upgrade access and connectivity including the Senai-Desaru and Desaru-Kuantan highways.
The state government was also upgrading the power and telecommunications infrastructure to cater for the anticipated increase in demand and coverage requirements.
"This is a measure of our seriousness in positioning Southeast Johor as the new regional hub for oil and gas by 2013," said Ghani.
He told reporters later that the goverment would spend RM200 milion in the next two years to expand the capacity of Tanjung Langsat Port and to deepen its berth.
The expansion project, he said, would also see the extension of the port's jetty.
Present at the ceremony here were LgT-1 Chairman Ngau Boon Keat, MISC President and Chief Executive Officer Amir Hamzah Azizan and Trafigura Beheer President and Founding Partner Claude Dauphin.
