Promoting public participation in community policing

17 November 2009 , By The Star

Building a network with the people and developing exemplary policemen are important steps in realising the Government’s efforts in reducing crime.

Johor deputy police chief Senior Asst Comm I Datuk Jalaluddin Ab Rahman stressed that public participation in community policing should be encouraged and developed by the police to maintain safety.

“If the police and the people work together, the goal of reducing crime can be easily achieved,” he said while referring to the Government’s announcement to reduce crime by 20% by the end of 2010.

SAC I Jalaluddin added that the districts should adopt and implement good ideas from neighbourhoods that actively practised community policing.

He was speaking at the launch of two community-policing groups in Nusajaya district.

“The Nusajaya community has shown initiative and been working closely with the police in reducing crime in its area.

“Other districts should follow suit as this is the best way to tackle crime,” he said.

“To aid in community policing, 40 police officers have been conducting 24-hour patrols at the district’s five zones,” he said.

SAC I Jalaluddin said, with the support of Iskandar Regional Development Authority and the State Economic Planning Unit, another two community stations would be erected.

Nusajaya district has developed 11 community-policing neighbourhoods which have been active since August 2007.
