JB-Singapore to have underground road connection

Malaysia and Singapore are looking at the possibility of expanding the scope of the proposed Rapid Transit System (RTS) between Singapore and Johor Bahru to also include underground road connection between the two countries, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak said.

A study has been commissioned for the most viable option for the RTS project, which is targeted to be operational by 2018, Najib said during a joint press conference given here together with his Singapore counterpart, Lee Hsien Loong, after the Malaysia-Singapore Leaders' Retreat here, today.

Malaysia and Singapore are looking at the possibility of an underground road link between the two countries.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak said a study, which has been commissioned on the proposed rapid transit system between Johor Baru and Singapore, will be expanded to include this.

Najib and his Singapore counterpart Lee Hsien Loong, who met at the Malaysia-Singapore Leaders' Retreat here Thursday, also agreed to explore other areas, including the alignment of radio frequency spectrum plans for digital broadcast and mobile broadband services.

This is to meet the growing demand for digital television and mobile broadband, improve regional mobile roaming services and provide competitive mobile broadband services.


Malaysians welcome Singapore's role in Iskandar

Malaysians generally welcome Singapore's involvement in their country's economic development, especially in the southern region of Johor.

Many are heartened by comments from Singapore Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong that it is very much in the interests of Singapore to see that Iskandar, the southern economic region, prosper and succeed.

Mr Lee said Iskandar's success can help ease the constraints faced by Singapore in terms of space and manpower.

Mr Lee was speaking after he met his Malaysian counterpart Najib Razak at their third leaders' retreat at the Malaysian administrative capital of Putrajaya on Thursday.

DECADES after they went their separate ways, Singapore and Malaysia are poised to get closer to each other than ever before.

Not only will crossing the border become a breeze, but the two countries plan to develop properties together, complement Singapore's manufacturing skills with Johor's abundant labour and pave the way for electricity sales.

KL, Singapore to expand links in Iskandar

Singapore and Malaysia are poised to broaden the scope of their cooperation in Iskandar Malaysia with Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong's proposal to explore industrial cooperation.

Meeting here on Thursday for a leaders' retreat, PM Lee and Malaysia's Prime Minister Najib Razak agreed that a new work group be set up under the Joint Ministerial Committee for Iskandar.

The work group will promote the 'twinning of economic activities' between Singapore and Iskandar, a large development region in south Johor, the two countries said in a joint statement.

Building on the momentum of good ties, the two leaders also discussed ways to strengthen cooperation in a range of areas, such as transport links, immigration, tourism and the environment.


Singapore and Malaysia plan underground road connection

Amid a flurry of proposals to connect Malaysia and Singapore, the two countries are looking at the possibility of building an underground tunnel.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak, after meeting his Singapore counterpart Lee Hsien Loong at their retreat here, told a joint press conference that a study commissioned to propose a viable option to link the two countries would be expanded “to include the possibility of an underground road connection between the two countries”.

The two leaders also agreed to set up a new working group to promote investments in Iskandar and Singapore.

Cooperation in education was also discussed while Singapore expressed interest in buying electricity from Malaysia.


MPCorp to begin works on city in Iskandar soon

Malaysia Pacific Corp Bhd (MPCorp) hopes to start civil construction works for its flagship project in Iskandar Malaysia by the first quarter next year, starting with the infrastructure surrounding its Asia Pacific Trade and Expo City (APTEC).

Speaking on the sidelines of the World Chinese Economic Forum, chairman Datuk Bill Ch’ng the company would collaborate with the Government to integrate and build the infrastructure and amenities like roads, rails and highways that would connect to the city.

He said the investment for APTEC, one of Iskandar Malaysia’s flagship projects, was about RM2.9bil from the total investment of RM4.5bil in the Lakehill Resort City.


Plan for SME hub in Medini Iskandar

A dedicated hub for small and medium enterprises (SMEs) will be set up on a 121-hectare zone at the Medini Iskandar Malaysia to provide an opportunity for SMEs to contribute to the growth of the corridor.
 
Iskandar Regional Development Authority (IRDA) chief executive Ismail Ibrahim said the facility will be set up in anticipation of the arrival of more SMEs to Iskandar Malaysia following a RM2 billion syariah-compliant SME Financing Fund announced in the recent Budget.

Mustapa: Provide more support to SMEs

Small and medium enterprises (SMEs) should be given more support, said International Trade and Industry Minister Datuk Seri Mustapa Mohamed.

“One of the main issues is financing support and we hope to raise it during the forthcoming budget,” he told reporters after a Miti dialogue with four national associations yesterday.

The associations were Federation of Malaysian Manufacturers (FMM), Malaysian International Chamber of Commerce and Industry (MICCI), Associated Chinese Chambers of Commerce in Malaysia (ACCCIM) and Malaysian Employers Federation (MEF).

The four associations raised issues related to financing for SMEs as well as foreign worker issues and utility tariffs at the dialogue.


Kereta api intra bandar masih dibincang

Pembinaan rangkaian kereta api intra bandar di kawasan Iskandar Malaysia menjelang 2012 masih di peringat perancangan, kata Menteri Besar, Datuk Abdul Ghani Othman.

Pembinaan projek bernilai RM1.23 bilion bersama Metropolitan Commuter Network Sdn. Bhd. (MCN) itu bagaimanapun telah diluluskan sebelum ini dalam usaha kerajaan negeri membangunkan pengangkutan awam yang lebih efektif di Iskandar Malaysia.

Beliau berkata, kerajaan negeri sentiasa menyokong usaha sektor swasta seperti MCN untuk menyediakan alternatif pengangkutan awam di negeri ini, namun ia perlu mendapat sokongan dan kelulusan Suruhanjaya Pengangkutan Awam Darat (SPAD), Unit Kerjasama Awam Swasta dan kerajaan Pusat sebelum dapat dilaksanakan.
